Forms Room

This room gathers artworks that transport us to the universe of Neorealism, an artistic and cultural movement that gained strength in Portugal from the 1940s onwards.

Deeply committed to social reality, the artists sought to give voice to the working classes and denounce the inequalities in the country.
Represented are Vasco Pereira da Conceição, Maria Barreira, and Jorge de Almeida Monteiro, three names linked to Bombarral and the history of this Museum.

Their works reveal a keen eye on everyday life, but also a belief in the power of art as an instrument of social transformation.

Joining them is Júlio Pomar, one of the great names of Portuguese contemporary art and a central figure of Neorealism. In Bombarral, Pomar found space for experimentation at the Bombarral Ceramic Factory, Ltd., where he combined art, technique, and industry in an environment of creation and debate.

Also exhibited are works in drawing, engraving, sculpture, illustration, ceramics, and medal-making, which reflect the formal diversity of the artists. Some pieces and documents had never been shown to the public before.

More than revisiting a moment in art history, the exhibition highlights Bombarral’s role as an innovative artistic hub in the mid-20th century, which deserves to be better known and valued, consolidating the area as a centre of creation, gathering, and thought.
