Sacred Route

Categories: Sem categoria

The Sacred Route is a religious and cultural itinerary that is part of the Oeste Sagrado project, launched in 2013 by the Intermunicipal Community of Oeste. This route covers 12 municipalities, including Bombarral, with the purpose of inventorying, promoting, and enhancing the collection of religious temples as historical, spiritual, and identity heritage of the region.

In Bombarral and its surroundings, several places of worship stand out:

The Sanctuary of Senhor Jesus do Carvalhal (or Bom Jesus), located in Carvalhal, is an architectural and landscape complex that includes a parish church, the Way of the Cross, pilgrims’ houses, and picnic areas, all within a setting of centuries-old pilgrimage.

The Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Vale Côvo, is characterised by its simple and functional architecture, reflecting the rural life of the community. It is a place of faith, prayer, and community gatherings, featuring prominently in local liturgical programmes.

The Church of the Most Holy Saviour of the World (in the town of Bombarral) and the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Vale Côvo, are the focus of guided visits organised by the ADPCCB, which explore modern religious architecture. These visits highlight works by architects such as Fernando de Barros Santa-Rita and sculptors like Leopoldo de Almeida and Jorge de Almeida Monteiro.

This route allows visitors to discover a variety of religious architectural examples, from romantic and landscaped sanctuaries to contemporary parish churches, demonstrating the historical, artistic, and spiritual richness of the municipality.

The main goal is to raise awareness among residents and visitors of this vast heritage, encouraging religious tourism and local economic development.

In summary, the Sacred Route in Bombarral:

Includes the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Carvalhal — a destination of pilgrimage and popular devotion;

Highlights rural, welcoming, and vibrant parish churches, such as the Sacred Heart in Vale Côvo;

Presents temples of modern design and artistic intervention, like the Church of the Most Holy Saviour of the World;

Is part of an intermunicipal project aimed at protecting, promoting, and enhancing the religious heritage of the Oeste region.

This route offers a unique opportunity to rediscover faith, art, and history in places that remain active parts of the community.
