Rota do Azulejo

The Tile Route in Bombarral is a cultural and tourist itinerary created with the aim of valorising the tile heritage of the municipality, promoting direct contact with one of the most emblematic artistic forms of Portuguese tradition. The azulejo is presented here as a testimony to history, religiosity and local identity, reflected in public buildings, churches, chapels, and commercial and administrative spaces included in the route.
The itinerary begins at the Praça do Município, one of the main hubs of the town, and extends to various points of interest where azulejos appear not only as decorative elements but as expressions of collective memory. Notable locations include the Town Hall, the Municipal Market, and especially the Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Socorro in Carvalhal, whose interior is richly covered with historic tiles depicting episodes of faith and tradition.
This initiative by the Bombarral Town Council not only provides a new way to experience the urban and rural spaces of the municipality, but also aims to promote cultural tourism, appealing both to the local population and to visitors. The Route is designed to be accessible and informative, linking heritage, art and territory in a cohesive manner.
Beyond their aesthetic value, the tiles presented along the Route reveal different periods and styles, ranging from traditional patterns to figurative panels, reflecting the evolution of artistic taste over the centuries. Thus, Bombarral stands as a guardian of a rich and unique artistic heritage in the Oeste region.
