Origins Room

The Origins Room proposes a journey through the most remote history of the municipality, through archaeological pieces that testify to human presence over millennia, and pre-human presence over millions of years.

The visitor finds fossils of primitive life forms and dinosaurs that document biodiversity existing long before the appearance of the human being.

From the Palaeolithic, stone tools are presented, such as a hand axe and other flaked stone instruments, used by bands of hunter-gatherers.

The Neolithic brings us tribes of farmers and herders, with signs of sedentarisation and spirituality, featuring a decorated ceramic vessel and small rabbit sculptures possibly used for symbolic or ritual purposes.

The chronological journey continues with the Copper Age and the Bronze Age, represented by arrowheads, blades, and metal axes, testimonies of technical evolution.

From the Roman Period, a delicate ceramic oil lamp evokes domestic daily life under the influence of the empire.

The journey ends with traces from the late Middle Ages, found in the Museum building itself and in the Chapel of São Brás: coins, ceramics, and stucco fragments that reveal the lifestyle, trade, and artistic expression of the time.

More than a collection of ancient objects, this room offers a reading of the territory through time, revealing its origins, its deep connection with the surrounding environment, the creativity of its communities, and the ongoing relationship between human beings, nature, and culture.
