The Battle of Roliça Interpretative Centre

The memory of the historical military battle that took place on 17 August 1808, in the vicinity, has now been eternalised in a new museologic structure: the NIBR – the Battle of Roliça Interpretative Centre.

Inaugurated on 17 November, this new cultural facility forms part of the Bombarral Museum Network and, to house the Centre, the Bombarral Municipal Council advanced with the conversion of the former Columbeira Primary School, endowing this building with a new life.

The NIBR was fitted out with exhibition contents, both in terms of physical objects and audiovisual means and including a virtual reality experience that guarantees a full interpretation of these events.

The visitor will also find eight replicas of nineteenth-century soldiers, produced at full scale, representing the main military forces of the August 1808 battle: Portuguese, French, and British.

The project also included the installation of a bicycle washing station next to the tile panel of the Peninsular War, the starting point of the walking and cycling route “Battle of Roliça Trail.”

This is an investment aligned with the Municipality’s strategic vision to contribute to the tourist and economic development of the territory, preserving its identity elements.

In this first phase, visits to the NIBR are free of charge, subject to prior booking.
