<\/span><\/div>Following refurbishment works, the museum reopened in June 2025 with the objective of promoting the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the council, safeguarding what brought us thus far and projecting this into the future.<\/p>\n
With a new collection and a contemporary museographic approach, providing inclusive experiences, reaffirming our new challenges: telling stories about our ORIGINS through archaeological heritage, exploring the SACRED through religious heritage, celebrating FORMS in the arts and plunging into the universe of WORDS in our literary heritage.<\/p>\n

<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>Gorj\u00e3o Palace<\/strong><\/h5>\nDating to the early 17th century, then known as the Palace of the Coimbras, this Monument later became the property of the Gorj\u00e3o Henriques family that gave the palace its current name.<\/p>\n
This was formerly the site of a coach transport station, a clothing factory and a college.<\/p>\n
The property was acquired by the Municipal Council in 1940. The North wing housed a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation library and a space used by a group of enthusiasts who drove the founding of the Museum and who undertook archaeological digs in the region and made up of: Jorge de Almeida Monteiro, Ant\u00f3nio Maur\u00edcio, Vasco Cortes and Antero Furtado. In 1985, the open air Amphitheatre and a Municipal Library opened. In 1990, the Museum opened its doors for the first time before undergoing classification as a property of public interest in 1996.<\/p>\n
With centuries of history and over three decades of activity as a museum and library, this is a veritable demonstration of transformation, creating memories and nurturing the local identity.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
Educational Service<\/strong><\/h5>\nThe education project incorporates the cultural mission of the museum, especially the safeguarding, dissemination and promotion of the tangible and intangible heritage of the council.<\/p>\n
This encapsulates the fourth Sustainable Development Goal: Guaranteeing access to inclusive education, quality and equality and promoting life-long learning opportunities for all.<\/p>\n
This Project produces activities for a varied range of publics, diverse cycles of education and different programs, fostering the close involvement of learning partners, school communities and, informally, the council\u2019s other infrastructures and institutions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
